Exterior Photography
Getting an amazing shot for a magazine, creating a great view of a house for a real estate company, my objective is always to make the building look stunning with a careful mix of composition and lighting, daylight and use of props available such as recliner chairs, tables & plants.
When working with a DSLR fix back camera, where the back of the camera is parallel to the lens, we need to look up or point down this creates the parallax effect, this is when vertical walls converge in or out of the frame, this effect is usually undesirable, so I correct in post-production along with all the other adjustments.
Photographs of old buildings, is straightforward and simple finding the best POV "point Of View", highlighting the character of the building. It's usually best to include some of the foreground and background to show perspective.
Photographing modern architecture I prefer an abstract approach. Shooting wide and low to distort perspectives shoot with interesting elements of the architecture dominating the frame.
Early Night-time or the "magic time" as I call it Is a real buzz for me as daylight becomes "balanced" with the artificial lighting. I will take care to illuminate large shadow areas to prevent "black holes" in the picture, The time this "magic time happens is actually a fleeting moment just after sunset and it only lasts for a few minutes.
